The second SUDO meeting held in Rome in person, from 20 to 22 May, organized by the Department for Cohesion Policies and for the South in collaboration with the MAECI, represented an important stage in the preparation of the Urban G7 under the Italian Presidency .

During the meeting, the institutional representatives of the participating countries discussed issues relating to three major themes: ecology and climate change, inclusive cities, innovation and digitalisation, in continuity with the work carried out during the previous presidencies German and Japanese.

The meeting was actively attended by representatives of the European Commission which finances urban policies in the three of the seven G7 countries, important international organizations - UN-Habitat, the OECD and ICLEI - which have specific expertise on these issues and the National Association of Italian Municipalities (ANCI) as a privileged witness regarding sustainable urban development in Italy.

The Department for Cohesion Policies and the South coordinated both the preparatory work of the SUDO and the holding of the meeting, providing the first elements for the shared working methodology and the first work proposals for the press release.

During the first day, the Department conducted the work that produced the first results regarding the identification of the themes and priorities of common interest already included in the Common Framework on which work had begun in the previous SUDO in April.

On the second day of work, the Department invited the Municipality of Rome to illustrate the main contents of its Strategy for urban development. The Capitoline Administration presented its program for urban development for the next few years based on environmental sustainability, innovation and the recovery of cultural and social heritage. Furthermore, a visit to urban regeneration projects in the municipality of Rome was organised, which provided international guests with direct experience of the implementation of the strategic programme.

This meeting was an important stage for the creation of a sharing space between countries to compare governance systems, implementation tools and results obtained through the exchange of practices, case studies and international cooperation initiatives in order to represent the countries' modus operandi G7, also with respect to exchanges with countries in the rest of the world.

In the following months, further meetings will follow, including bilateral ones, to identify the shared themes and topics that will be the final communicated object.
